Words To Think About

“You can’t wait for inspiration, you have to go after it with a club.” — Jack London

This is a quote that I feel I need to make a sign out of and post it in multiple places in my home. I know just as well as any other artist who has striven to make a living from their art that you really can’t wait for inspiration to hit. Even though I’ve been either unable to heed its call when it does emerge its head, or I’ve ignored it. As my son and I start to better work into a nice schedule during the day, I need to have the discipline to quit spending all of my time on the couch/on the computer, and get back in front of the easel. I’ve even set up a blank canvas on it, though I find that it is putting me in that “frozen” state of mind as I tried to illustrate in my little doodle on my last blog entry. I thought it’d have the opposite effect. Maybe I’ve been stagnant for so long that I’m really that fearful. However, there’s nothing to be afraid of, and I need to be bull-headed and, well, go after it with a club.

“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.” — Henry Ward Beecher

And my, how our natures as human beings change over time. I’ve re-visited certain stages of my life and you can see it through my art. It may be executed with different knowledge but the subject matter/style tends to be the same. This quote is pretty straight-forward, I don’t have a lot of ramblings to offer on this one 🙂

“If you hear a voice within you say, ‘You cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” — Vincent van Gogh

Ultimately, this is the one I need to listen to the most. The voice within me isn’t always ‘You cannot paint’, but moreso ‘What you paint will not be what you envision’, which to me, is just as scary. I think my problem lies in lack of self-confidence. There are times in my life where that isn’t a factor, it doesn’t matter, and I will blast through every and any creative opportunity presented to me. Other times, it paralyzes me.

I’m considering making my next project to take these 3 quotes, and draw up signage containing them, then frame them and put them up around the house. What do you all think?

  1. I think that is a wonderful idea. I also realize that if a painting doesn't work out it may be necessary for the growth step to bring into fruition the painting that will come. Look at it as a stepping stone, easier to take the leap. Glad I ound your blog and beautiful art.
